The Best Late-Night
Desserts in London.

Where to go when dinner is done and you still want something worth eating.

London has a late-night dessert problem. The city has extraordinary restaurants, remarkable bakeries, and a world-class food culture — but finding something genuinely worth eating after 9pm, beyond a chain restaurant or a mediocre ice cream counter, requires knowing where to look.

Here is our guide to the best options — honest, specific, and based on quality rather than hype.

Gelatone — Covent Garden

Open until 9.30pm

Gelatone is the obvious starting point for anyone looking for a serious dessert in central London. Open seven days a week until 9.30pm, it is one of the few places in the city where you can get genuinely artisanal gelato — made fresh that morning, from single-origin ingredients — late in the evening. The pistachio, made from Bronte DOP pistachios, is the benchmark. The fior di latte is quietly perfect. 23 Rose Street, Covent Garden.

The neighbourhood gelateria

What to look for

Beyond Gelatone, the quality of late-night dessert options in London varies sharply. The best independent gelaterias in the city — a small and growing number — tend to stay open until at least 10pm or 11pm on weekends. Look for muted, natural colours in the display case, a focused menu of 8–12 flavours, and staff who can tell you where the pistachios are from. If the colours are vivid and the menu has 40 options, the product is almost certainly industrial.

Japanese bakeries and patisseries

An honourable mention

London's Japanese bakery scene — particularly in Soho and the West End — has produced a number of spots with serious late-night dessert offerings. The aesthetic is different from a gelateria, but the commitment to technique and ingredient quality is often comparable. Worth knowing about if you are in the neighbourhood and the gelato queues are long.

Hotel bars and dessert counters

For a different occasion

Several of London's better hotel bars — particularly those in the West End — now offer serious dessert menus until midnight or beyond. The quality is inconsistent, and the price point is high, but for a sit-down late-night dessert experience in an atmospheric setting, some of the city's best hotel bars are genuinely worth considering. The Savoy's American Bar and The Connaught Bar both occasionally feature dessert options on their late menus.
